Global Markets

The S&P 500 fell 0.48% over the week, extending a decline that began in late December and continued into the first trading day of the new year. This drop erased more than a trillion dollars in market value. However, a 1.26% rise on the last day offered some relief following a week of selling pressure. Bond prices rose, pushing the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield down to 4.60%.

Chinese stocks extended their worst start to the year since 2016, reflecting concerns about the growth outlook. The yuan weakened, breaching the psychologically important level of 7.3 against the dollar for the first time since late 2022. Financial markets in Japan remained closed.

Oil prices rose following an industry report signaling a further contraction in U.S. crude inventories. Gold posted its best weekly gain since November.

Indonesian Markets

The Indonesian stock market began the first week of the year strongly, with the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) gaining 1.82%. This was supported by the strengthening of the Rupiah to 16,217 per U.S. dollar. The 10-year government bond yield remained relatively steady at 7.01%.
